Climbing:
Efficient suspension and nice firm pedaling platform. This bike has incredible traction up and downhill. I liked the dpx2 rear shock on this bike for the climbs. It sat high in its travel and provided lots of small bump sensitivity. The wide rims allow you to run very low tire pressures. At 5’11” 175lbs I was running 16 psi in the front tire and 17psi in the back, far lower than my usual pressures. This bike can scoot up rocks and roots with traction while sitting or standing. I found that the front end didn’t wander on the steeps, and tight technical switchbacks were a breeze on this bike. High horsepower is rewarded on this bike and hard pedaling boosts speed well.
Trail Manners:
The Ripmo likes to hit extra credit and pops really well at any speed. It is an instantly comfortable bike and feels precise and nimble for its size. What sets this bike apart from the crowd is that it excels at just about everything, and it’s fun on all but the mellowest trails.
Descending:
Super fun, able to boost off jumps and pumps well in the whoops. It flies out of corners, and speaking of corners, the Ripmo is about the best cornering bike I have been on. At low tire pressure with narrower rims I always found my tires folding a bit under hard cornering. This was not the case with the ibis wheels, and the traction was second to none. I do find you have to weight the front a bit in order to corner hard, but not near as much as the Yeti SB 150. Unlike the SB 150 which only seems to have fun on the steepest gnarliest descents, the Ripmo, while capable of racing enduro, seems much more fun on the slower and more technical trails. Indeed the Ripmo is light on its feet and is very precise in handling allowing you to tiptoe around obstacles as well as plow over them. I wouldn’t hesitate to race this bike, however, it’s probably more of a trail bike in nature.
Closing Arguments:
I would say this is one of the best all around bikes I have been on. The Ripmo seems to do everything well. Most bikes compromise something, and I’m not sure I have found that compromise on this bike other than price maybe.
FYI if you are lucky enough to be considering this bike as your next ride there might be a few considerations. If I were racing I would probably go with the x2 shock being that I was able to bottom out this bike pretty easy. The x2 can be fine-tuned and has a nice big bottom out bumper to aid with the big hits. As a trail bike, I would go with the dpx2 as it is a smidge lighter and seems to provide a great pedalling platform. It’s tempting to go with a skinnier rim and lighter tire combo on this bike, and if you have mellowed trails you could consider that option. If it were me I would go with the wide ibis rims. The low pressures are amazing, and while I probably wouldn’t race with them, I would trail ride with them all day. Finally, I would consider putting a 200mm rotor up front if you are a trail smasher. I have seen some real weight weenie builds on this bike, but if going fast is your thing better brakes are a must because this bike is fast!
I gave the Yeti SB 150 a 5/5 star review as a race bike, and this Ripmo deserves a 5/5 as a trail bike. Where the Yeti SB 150 excels is the gnar, the Ripmo excels everywhere else, and yes it’s also plenty gnar.
