Intro Text

Snow, rain, wet, mud and near-freezing conditions didn't stop the first Enduro World Series from taking place in Zermatt. The race was extremely abbreviated with only two stages, but we'll take any racing at this point and the competitors agreed. Jesse Melamed took the EWS victory in the sloppy conditions while Isabeau Courdurier walloped the Elite Women's class by over 20 seconds. Sven Martin and @maddogboris fight the freeze and wander in the wet to deliver the incredible racing stories.

Jesse Melamed takes the EWS win in Zermatt. The Canadian stomped on the gas on stage 1 to create a margin too large for Martin Maes to make up. Just 4 seconds separated Jesse and Martin at the end of racing. @maddogboris
Thanks to the Crankworx Summer Series, Jesse was well-prepared. @maddogboris
Jesse Melamed or MelaMUD? -Sven Martin
Isabeau Courdurier victorious at the first EWS in 2020 with two stage wins and a 23-second gap ahead of second place. @maddogboris
Isabeau proving that she will be tough to beat this year. -Sven Martin
Winning bike with rider and team. @maddogboris
Martin Maes started off a bit safe and slow (by his standards). When he was warmed up, he won stage two, but was not quick enough to catch Jesse. -Sven Martin
Martin Maes just 4.64 seconds behind Jesse in second place. @maddogboris
Flat Pedal Thunder, Morgane Charre, always looks pinned and her aggressive riding style is a photographers's favorite. Second place for her! @maddogboris
Antoine Vidal won the Junior race even with an injured leg after a crash in training. On Stage 2 he was 20 seconds faster than the second-fastest stage time from Jamie Edmondson in Elites. @maddogboris
Trek Factory Racing rider, Harriet Harden, taking the win in the Women U21 Group. With her time she would have been 4th in the Elites. @maddogboris
Finally a podium for Theo Galy, who has been chipping away at the EWS since Punta Ala 2013. -Sven Martin
The EWS 100 riders were sent off as guinea pigs this morning. If they could handle the conditions, the race was on. Jeff Callum starts his day in the rain. Chris Ball in audio. -Sven Martin
Elliott Heap started the day with a solid third on the first stage. A few more intervals and we can expect big things from Sam Hill’s teammate. -Sven Martin
At low altitudes, it was mostly this. -Sven Martin
The tinfoil hat isn't enough these days, what with 5G and all. Boris knows his extremities are an easy entry point for government control and takes the proper precautionary measures. -Sven Martin
Aussie, Aussie, Aussi. Oi, Oi, Oi. Jack Moir just two seconds of the podium. Still super stoked about his 4th place. @maddogboris
Ella Conolly claims she had a terrible day on the bike with multiple crashes. It will be interesting to see where she finishes when she is happy with her riding. Third place for the young rider. -Sven Martin
Big smiles for the Scottish conditions from Ella. -Sven Martin
Bernard Kerr on his way to finish his first-ever EWS. 19th place and not super stoked on racing EWS. Will we see him again at an EWS? A nice, long, fun interview with Bernie, Eddie and Charlie inside. @maddogboris
Eddie Masters, who is normally quite handy in these types of conditions, had an unlucky start to the day. -Sven Martin
Good morning. @maddogboris
Yep. 5 degrees and rain. @maddogboris
When you are already wet, it doesn't matter if you try to get shots like this. @maddogboris
Looks like Robin Wallner did enough pushups in the last few month. @maddogboris
Sam Hill isn’t here but fear not, his pedals still made the podium (twice), under Morgane Charre and Nigel Page’s feet. -Sven Martin
Catching flies? @maddogboris
When Shorties are the tire choice for the day you know it's going to be a wild and wet one. Morgane Charre goes all in. -Sven Martin
It was a short, but hard, race for both bodies and bikes. @maddogboris
South African downhiller, Theo Erlangsen, not quite used to snow, preps his feet to stay warm and dry -Sven Martin
Nigel Page, Nukeproof Team Manager, won Masters. @maddogboris
Louise Paulin with an early start, taking the win in the Masters Women's today by well over a minute! -Sven Martin
Anita Gehrig not too far off the top with a solid fourth-place start. -Sven Martin
Stoked Vid Persak about his 10th place in Zermatt. @maddogboris
French jokes? ;) @maddogboris
Snow slowly settled at low (for summer) altitudes all morning. -Sven Martin
Martha Gill was happy enough in the British conditions. One-handed-skinny-snow-covered-bridge-wheelie for warm-up -Sven Martin
Hattie Harnden leads the climb in the snow. Winning Juniors, she would have placed 4th in the Elites. Amazing result for another Tracy Moseley project protege. -Sven Martin
Cole Lucas hangs it out. It seemed the faster you went, the more traction you had in the mud. -Sven Martin
Joe Barnes in the dark, wet woods. Just like a summer Ft. William ride. -Sven Martin
Jack Moir did not disappoint his Instagram fans. Fourth place in his fourth-ever EWS. -Sven Martin
Great result (11th) for Alex Rudeau, another rider mentored by the Ravanels. -Sven Martin
Scandi-ing dry dirt is one thing, slick rocks is another. Morgane Jonnier charging into seventh. -Sven Martin
Mud, rocks, and greenery. @maddogboris
Off-camber corners littered with muddy roots and slick rocks...what could possibly go wrong? Dimitri Tordo goes down briefly. -Sven Martin
Miranda Miller loved the tracks and the conditions out here in Zermatt :-) -Sven Martin
Katy Winton in winter NZ-like conditions with a solid start to the EWS season. Fifth place today. -Sven Martin
Noga had a mechanical on stage one and a third on two. She had the same problem on the same stage last year. -Sven Martin
Good to see some of the riders washing their own bikes despite having factory mechanics. -Sven Martin
Brady Stone started his season in a similar manner to last year. Second place Junior today for the young Kiwi. -Sven Martin
Kevin with an unlucky start to the morning. His jacket fell into his drive train and ruined his chances of a podium. -Sven Martin
Robin Wallner, sixth place for the smooth Swede on the smooth flow trail section of the long stage two. -Sven Martin
Ella Conolly sprinting full gas out of the berm to 3rd place. @maddogboris
While other were waiting for the race updates, mechanics were preparing bikes and tires while trying to stay warm. @maddogboris
Alex Rudeau of the Commencal Enduro Team with a solid 11th and the lowest tuck. @maddogboris
Sunn Enduro Factory Team Rider, Theo Galy, with a third-place and the first time on an EWS podium. Congrats. @maddogboris
Moody morning in Zermatt. Actually Zermatt is one of the places in Europe with the fewest rain days per year. @maddogboris
Wet upon wet. @maddogboris
EWS Zermatt Men Podium @maddogboris
EWS Zermatt Team Podium. @maddogboris
