Intro Text

The sights and the sounds of the 2018 Leogang World Cup downhill can do the talking. Sven Martin, @maddogboris and Dan Hearn capture the intense drama that unfolded as the fastest mountain bikers on the planet battled to within milliseconds of each other on a fast, dry, rough Austrian course.

If you haven't listened already, hit play on the audio right here and enjoy the story-telling slideshow below with photos and captions.

With the help of a few fans and some class riding, Amaury Pierron delivered a show to remember. -Dan Hearn
Another victory celebration in front of the whole family for Amaury. -Sven Martin
Rachel Atherton slides into the hot seat and then to the top step of the podium. -Sven Martin
Tense moments in the hot seat for Rachel while Tahnee comes down the hill. -Sven Martin
It's been one year and one race since Rachel has won a World Cup. Her longest dry streak in 13 years of racing World Cups. -Sven Martin
Kye A'hern was slightly back at all 4 splits but fought hard right to the end to take the win by just 0.05 seconds. -Dan Hearn
It was a wild Junior Women's race today. Vali Höll crashed and lost a ton of time, yet managed to claw back enough to take yet another win in front of her home crowd. -Dan Hearn
Aaron Gwin sure knows how to look fast on a bike. Lucky for him, he is pretty quick too. The King of Leogang was dethroned today, but 2nd place and only half a second back is no mean feat with a hand injury. -Dan Hearn
2nd for Gwin, perhaps no longer the King of Leogang, but certainly a crazy result considering how few practice runs he did and the injury he carries. -Dan Hearn
Sketchy race run moment for Pom Pon. She was more than happy and proud that she rode out of this situation without crashing! @maddogboris
A hard-fought battle for Pompon who looked as though she might claw back enough time at the bottom of the course, but had to settle for 2nd place. -Dan Hearn
Thibaut Daprella on his way to second place. He was fastest at split 1 to 4 and lost the important time in the last split on the way to the finish. 2nd place with just 0.050 seconds behind Kye. @maddogboris
Junior women second place finisher, Nastasia Gimenez! @maddogboris
Yeow Lozza! With the Mondraker team practicing close together all weekend, it's sometimes hard to judge pace. But Laurie pulled it out the bag in finals and bagged third place. -Dan Hearn
Laurie knows that It's mostly a mental game at this level. -Sven Martin
Tracey Hannah was pinned all week and finished Leogang with a 3rd Place. Well done! @maddogboris
Troy was disappointed with his run but happy with the result, he made too many mistakes and felt he let the chance of a win slip away. -Sven Martin
Tahnee Seagrave got disqualified because she went out of the track on the motorway. She realized by the time she hiked back up to re-enter where she left, there were no points to be made, so she cracked on to the bottom anyway. @maddogboris
You win some, you lose some. Not Tahnée Seagrave's day but still some positives to bring to Val Di Sole. -Dan Hearn
Not how Luca envisioned this race ending, especially after such a good qualifying round. -Dan Hearn
Loris was clearly disappointed with 5th but with times as tight as they were today, nothing is ever certain. He pushed hard and made a couple of mistakes that cost him a higher step on the podium. -Dan Hearn
Dakota Norton always looks rad on a bike and here is no exception. So far this year he has had a 5th, a 31st and a 6th today - and you can expect to see him in the Top 10 at the next few races. -Dan Hearn
Sven Martin Tech Support. #oops -Dan Hearn
Emilie Siegenthaler knows how to enter full race-mode for finals. A great run put her on the last podium spot in 5th. -Dan Hearn
Ottilia Johansson with her first podium in the Junior ladies. -Sven Martin
Rupert lost his shoe during a nasty crash and came back after he finished his race to pick it up! @maddogboris
The reason why Rupert Chapman had to come back to pick up his shoe! @maddogboris
Nah that's not Rupert Chapman losing his shoe, that´s Kirk McDowall. Yikes! @maddogboris
Mike Jones told us yesterday about the training-train-practice session with his teammates and we guess his 8th place proved that it works. @maddogboris
What can be said about Mike Jones other than he consistently looked one of the most aggressive riders in practice and stormed into 8th place in finals. Stoked for you Mike! -Dan Hearn
After the second-fastest qualifier, Brook with a hacked Instagram account, distracted, leaves Leogang with a 9th Place (which is still better than most of his performances last year). @maddogboris
Connor Fearon always one of the fastest through any turn. -Sven Martin
Adam Brayton puts his crossfire to good use in the stair steps section near the end. Staying upright and off the bars is tough this deep into your run, if you are pushing, is no easy task. -Sven Martin
Marcelo with another Top 15. Flying into the finish area. -Sven Martin
Deja Vu from last weekend. If you look closely, you will see the red card writing light on Boris' camera taking the shot at the exact same time - check the next shot. -Sven Martin
He did it again! What a Legend. @maddogboris
First light and first runs early this morning in the short women's practice before the long wait for the final -Sven Martin
Henry Kerr with the faster inside line, setting him up for his first podium in the Juniors. -Sven Martin
Gee Atherton dropping into the finish stretches. -Sven Martin
Loic Bruni leaned and already two moves ahead going into this corner during training. -Sven Martin
Usually racers have crashes in the race not after the race on the way back to the pits. Kade Edwards always knows how to surprise us. Check his latest Instagram post! @maddogboris
Not a race for Anna Newkirk to remember. It could have been an interesting battle between her and Vali. Both Junior women crashed, but Anna ended up with a front flat, too. @maddogboris
OMG Finn! Using training runs for Whip-off training? @maddogboris
It's crazy that 4 seconds would push you back into 11th place but that's what Loic Bruni settled for. He'll be on the hunt to knock even more numbers off his fresh 13 plate as soon as possible. -Dan Hearn
Monika Hrastnik 4th place in Elite Women. Charging! @maddogboris
Brendan Fairclough had some issue in his race run and used his time for some steeze instead. @maddogboris
Early Bird Kye A'hern on track to find the line to the podium which helped him to win the race by just .05 seconds. @maddogboris
3 World Cups and 3 wins! Vali Holl isn't just super fast and super stylish, she is also a super nice, educated and polite. She's back to school before Val di Sole. @maddogboris
What would a race be without a proper jump and a Mick Hannah sui? @maddogboris
Brook MacDonald, no margin for error on the clock or the track. @maddogboris
Rachel early this morning in the crisp light after last night's rain. -Sven Martin
This pair of 2nd place teammates today ensured Commencal Vallnord were awarded Team of the Day. -Dan Hearn
Not a great run from Danny Hart who was clearly seeking more from this weekend. He slips one plate number into 8th going into Val Di Sole. -Dan Hearn
Junior winner Kye A'hern's sister Sian finished 6th in Elite women, not too far off podium pace. -Dan Hearn
Alex Marin catching a few rays on his way into the finish area. -Dan Hearn
Tracey Hannah calm and composed in the morning training. -Sven Martin
Reece Wilson was on for a top 10 result until he blew his feet of the pedals before the 4th split. He still finished a solid 22nd. -Dan Hearn
Scrub-a-dub-dub! -Dan Hearn
Jamie Edmondson had time to blow up a corner for the camera in his race run! Another step in the right direction for the Brit. -Dan Hearn
Mark Wallace smashing his way through the final berm into 10th place. -Dan Hearn
Your Leogang Junior Downhill World Cup Podium (left to right): Thibaut Daprela, Kye A'hean and Henry Kerr. @maddogboris
Second Word Cup win and first time wearing the leaders Jersey for Amaury. -Sven Martin
We can't wait to witness many more podiums with Amaury! @maddogboris
Next stop, Val Di Sole for some prosecco. -Sven Martin
