Intro Text

Qualifying at the 2019 World Cup Downhill in Maribor, Slovenia, was full of surprises. Mark Wallace set a personal best with a first place run. Greg Minnaar failed to qualify. All three Pierron brothers made the finals, and to loosely quote Eliot Jackson from his killer analysis video, the rain turned the easiest parts of the track (bike park berms) into the most treacherous parts of the track. The hard-packed clay was peanut buttery ice rink for some, But hey...that's racing! Sven, Boris and Dan slip and slide their way into your eyes and ears.

So stoked for Mark Wallace! He surprised himself with the fastest qualifier in Elite Men today. @maddogboris
The exact second that Greg failed to qualify for a World Cup for the very first time in his twenty-year career. He missed by .1 seconds. Let that fact sink in. What a career. See you Ft. William. -Sven Martin
Some riders definitely rode under different conditions today. Good luck cornering and braking if your tires looked like this. -Sven Martin
Muddy! @maddogboris
New in 2019. The riders will get the leader's jersey already after qualifying. @maddogboris
Tracey Hannah floating over the rocks into a first place qualifier. She's stoked to be back racing after a tough off season training. -Dan Hearn
Yeow, Tracey! @maddogboris
Phil Atwill had a tough day today. Blowing his front tire on the catch berm before the monster step-down. He took a big digger trying to abort with the anchors. Then another crash ended his chances in qualifying. His riding has been next level this week. What a shame. -Sven Martin
Thibaut Daprela getting it done in qualis and into top spot. -Dan Hearn
Vali Holl in her run today. Second fastest women's time in all classes, but on a slightly dryer course. -Sven Martin
What does Vali do to keep mentally and physically alert before her run? The secret is out. -Sven Martin
Anna Newkirk racing for the Canyon Young guns "just" 9 seconds behind Vali in 2nd and on her way up. #USDH @maddogboris
Finn Iles rode his front wheel for a fair few meters through the rock garden during qualis, but can't have lost any time because he qualified 3rd. -Dan Hearn
The Canadians are the new Brits. Especially after today's qualifying. -Sven Martin
Charlie Harrison sending it big into the smallest of landings, which is actually the start of a slippery bermed turn. -Sven Martin
Jure Zabjek back in the Top10. He was so happy to be back up there after many injuries in 2018. @maddogboris
Crowd favorite, Loic Bruni, kept it calm and smooth through the hectic rocks. 9th place today. -Dan Hearn
You know that thing that every guy has thought about trying? -Dan Hearn
Troy using all of his body to redirect out of catch berms into highlands above the roots. -Sven Martin
Bernard Kerr nailing the inside line that many more rode in the dry compared to today. -Dan Hearn
George Brannigan back in the Top 10 after some bad luck with re occurring injuries the past two seasons. Now is his time to shine. -Dan Hearn
We're stoked, too, George! -Sven Martin
Tahnee Seagrave sending and tweaking the double stepdown in the open. -Sven Martin
Rachel Atherton lost time at the bottom of the track compared to Tracey Hannah and has some seconds to find through the compressions and loose turns. -Dan Hearn
Not many people better than Connor Fearon to demonstrate how to rail the inside of an off-camber. -Dan Hearn
Sik Mik re-enacting last weekend's festivities. -Sven Martin
Dakota with a second day of style. -Sven Martin
Gwin laid over and on the gas on the tiniest of tire edges. -Sven Martin

Aaron Gwin wondering if he can bring his McLaren to the Mercedes hotseat. -Sven Martin
Nina Hoffmann still hungry for the podium after a 2nd last weekend. Fourth place today. -Sven Martin
UK's Joe Breeden pushed on and landed a 12th place. -Dan Hearn
Make sure you're well rested for quail. Grab 40 winks in the soft loam on your way past. -Dan Hearn
Matt Walker with a crash (check his saddle) at the top. He almost added another near the bottom with this big nose case on the canyon gap. -Sven Martin
Kye A'Hern in a berm that's helping him turn. (3am caption) -Sven Martin
French Junior, Emile Rilat, with the 4th fastest quali time. @maddogboris
European Champ, Franky Pardal, slides into the Top 20 today and manages to keep his kit relatively clean. -Sven Martin
Off-camber wipe out! @maddogboris
Brook MacDonald is on the off-camber, inside line since run one. Here he is setting up to hit it harder than anybody else. The next picture of Amaury is taken from the same spot. @maddogboris
And here you have the safer line. Only problem is, when you ride as fast as Amaury and you jump out of the rut. Check his Instagram feed for the crash that follows. @maddogboris
Full moto for Loris Vergier! @maddogboris
To carry the most speed you can, push into the big dip or pre-jump it. Here you see Laurie Greenland with the second option. @maddogboris
Ethan Shandro finished his first World Cup qualifier in 2nd place. Ain't no thang. @maddogboris
Monika Hrastnik 5th fastest in quali on home soil. @maddogboris

All 3 Pierrons qualified today. Antoine was the last of them coming down and with the fastest time in the finish. 0.1 seconds faster than his brother Amaury! @maddogboris
Yeah it was rainy. @maddogboris
Our old Vital buddy, Duncan Philpott, hopefully likes my black and white editing. @maddogboris
Early morning wake up creativity. @maddogboris
3rd place for Mille Johnset getting up to speed with her new bike. -Dan Hearn
