First Look: 2013 Specialized S-Works Enduro Carbon

"Climb Higher. Descend Farther." That's Specialized's slogan for the brand spanking new 2013 S-Works Enduro Carbon. With enduro racing becoming more common, they were driven to improve the bike's pedaling characteristics for the upcoming year.
There are new aluminum versions as well. This is the Enduro Comp, and there's also an Expert edition. Both share the same geometry, new linkage, and many of the finer details as the S-Works model.
More travel, less weight. The new Enduro has 165mm of rear travel coupled with a new 34mm Fox fork. Frames are 100-120 grams lighter in the carbon variety, and 80 grams less in aluminum.
Internal routing and water bottle mounts were a must when they sat down to design this beauty.
As Sloan explains, they changed the shock configuration so it no longer uses DU bushings, but now now uses the same system as previously used on the Stumpjumper.
For 2013, you'll see the super adjustable Cane Creek DBair on the S-Works model. In our own testing, this shock has proven to be one of the best air shocks available.
The Comp and Expert versions are equipped with Fox shocks with an Auto-Sag feature that makes suspension setup quicker and easier.
Aside from a few cosmetic changes, the 2013 version has a very similar layout to 2012, and geometry is very similar.
The only major change geometry wise is a shorter headtube, which will help keep the overall stack height reasonable.
SMOOTH!
Fed up with finicky plastic solutions, Specialized came up with a clever new seat clamp to hold the dropper post cable in place.
Specialized was one of the first to adopt SRAM's new XX1 system. It's 1x11 with a huge 42 tooth cassette in the rear.
Just to ensure the chain stays put, they opted to put a simple E.13 single speed guide up front. Sloan said that testing has proven the XX1 chainring to be super impressive with regards to chain retention, even without a guide.
Also new for 2013 are the Roval Traverse SL rims. These all-mountain specific carbon rims will come on the S-Works Enduro model, and aluminum versions will come on the Expert and Comp. Watch for more details on these in the coming days.
It's so good, we had to give you one more look. Watch for a Vital exclusive Enduro video with Curtis Keene and crew dropping sometime soon. You'll dig it.
