Fabien Barel with his enduro racing set up: Mondraker Foxy with 140mm travel rear and Fox Float 36 RLC with 160mm in the front. He's running a new Urge All M helmet and the Evoc pack rounds up his kit. By Sven Martin
A head angle you might usually find on a DH bike...64-degrees. Fabien actually sets up his cockpit to match the feel of his DH bike for descending. There is a reason for every little tweak on Fabien's bike.
Chris Porter from Mojo Suspension explains the setup: The set-up is for 'blind riding' as there is no chance to walk the tracks prior to racing, as well as, to give Fab the ability to get back up the hills. He's running stock, medium compression and rebound in the rear.
Chris Porter continues: We went for just under 40% sag on the rear with the adaptive logic RP23 set so that position 1 is zero (minimum pro-pedal) and position 2 is max for climbing and to hold up the rear for technical climbs.
Fabien swapped to DH casing tires for rocky sections of Trans Provence. His integrated fender/mudguard keeps things tidy whether conditions are wet or dry. Fab ran 65psi in the fork to get the support, but he used it ALL when it got rough. Compression was set to minimum. Comfort along punishing stages was more important than feedback for once.
Saving weight where he can but limiting potential mechanical problems, Fab uses a SRAM XX rear derailleur and protects the shifter cable.
Fabien chooses his partners wisely. He specs his race bikes with only the parts he wants. Formula R1 brakes with 180mm rotor are some of the lightest and strongest brakes available today.
Lightweight with power and polish. Formula R1 brakes.
Renthal lock-on grips with soft compound.
Running a single ring up front (32 tooth), Fabien has room to mount his KS adjustable seatpost remote on the left side of the bars.
WTB silverado with Ti rails and KS seatpost.
Renthal stem with 10 degrees rise and 50mm length. Anodized and shot-peened Renthal Fatbars with laser etched positioning grid.
Crankbrothers Acid 3 pedals with Ti wings and e.thirteen XC crankset with LG1+ chainguide on his 32 tooth set up.
At the end of each stage of the Trans Provence, the timing box was held by a human to avoid any confusion on where to stop or where the timed stages ended. Half the time though it was still well hidden inside Ed Oxley's famous beard.
Fabien won five special stages during the 2011 Trans Provence. Second, only to Nico in amount of stage wins, Fabien proves retirement doesn't really mean much to these racers.
Fabien with some of his Urge teammates. Rowan Sorrell, Mark Weir and Ben Cruz on crutches. A good ending to a great week of racing, riding and hanging out with friends old and new.
