Used Fishing Nets in Your Grips - Bontrager's New XR Trail Grip

In a partnership with Plastix, Bontrager is using recycled fishing nets in the core of its latest mountain bike grip.

Bontrager released a lineup of three new XR Trail Grip models today, each of which features a core made from recycled, potentially ocean-bound plastic. The recycled grip core is thanks to a partnership between Bontrager and Plastix, a cleantech recycling company that captures post-use plastic and converts it to raw material.

Plastix sources fibers and rigid plastics primarily from the maritime industry, including end-of-life fishing nets and ropes that would have ended up in oceans or landfills. The company sorts, shreds, washes, separates, and dries the material before extruding it into Green Plastic pellets that can be used to manufacture consumer goods.

"A grip core is a small thing," said Michael Fitch, Trek's Director of Product for Essentials. "But small things can add up to something meaningful. We believe in Plastix' vision for a circular economy for plastic, where this material is never considered waste, and we're excited to partner with them on this essential step."

This is not Bontrager's first use of recycled plastics—the popular Bat Cage is also made from end-of-life fishing nets—but it is an exciting move into a new product category and an expansion that sets the stage for using sustainable manufacturing methods for more plastic bike parts.

The new XR Trail Grip lineup comprises three models, each of which has a grip core made from recycled plastic.

XR Trail Pro is a dual lock-on MTB grip with a wider 32mm diameter for more to grab onto when things get rowdy. Each clamp features an alloy CoreLock design for secure positioning and provides dependable, predictable performance.

XR Trail Elite is a durable lock-on grip with an alloy CoreLock design. The higher density endcaps resist scraping and hold up even if you lay the bike down. The 31mm diameter hits the sweet spot for most riders.

XR Trail Comp has a 31mm diameter and a single nylon CoreLock design that balances value with maximum grip retention.

The new XR Trail Grips are available immediately through Trek's wide network of global retail partners and online at trekbikes.com in select markets.
