Ellsworth Athletes Notch Top Results Across the Globe

Ellsworth Athletes Notch Top Results Across the Globe
Summer 2009 newsletter

RAMONA, CA – September 1, 2009 – Sponsored athletes from Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicycles have been rubbing elbows with the most elite riders across the globe this summer, racking up a number of top-ten finishes, wins, and personal bests. Not to be outdone by the fully-supported and pampered world cup racers, our crew has been doing it the Ellsworth way – notching results with dogged determination, grit, and wonderfully performing bikes.

Ellsworth stalwarts Pua Sawicki, Jack Reading, Neven Steinmetz as well as our adventure racing teams have been putting up impressive results on the gamut of Ellsworth XC, DH, and All-Mountain rigs. Check out the athlete breakdown below, watch the videos, read up on the bikes and then go ride one for yourself! For Dealer locations, click here.

Pua Sawicki
Ms. Sawicki needs little introduction – she’s an endurance mountain bike superstar who just took the highest US finish ever (for women and men!) in the UCI World Cup Marathon race in Graz, Austria. Pua mixed it up with all-world rider Sabine Spitz and finished 7th overall in the 53-mile race.

Beyond marathon events, Pua has found success with a renewed emphasis on the pro cross country circuit. She recently competed in the final ProXCT tour race, earning enough points during the season to give her a 5th place finish overall. Pua shared the final podium with elite company, joining US riders Heather Irmiger and Georgia Gould. Pua’s racing quiver includes the Truth and Enlightenment and she is aiming to set an official Guinness World Record for the most miles ridden on a mountain bike at the 24 Hours of Moab in October!

Jack Reading
Our pro downhiller from across the pond, Jack Reading, finished top-10 on his Project Pink Dare, at Whistler’s August 9th “Garbanzo Downhill” Crankworx event. Jack’s uncanny ability to point his Dare (lovingly named “Roxy”) downhill - taking lines of maximum speed and least resistance - have shot this youngster to the upper echelon of gravity athletes. Jack sums up his progress as a rider in this post-race quote:

“I finished 9th with a time of 14 minutes 20 seconds, which in retrospect and looking at the company I’m on the results sheet with, is fantastic. The 8 guys who beat me are all fully sponsored, paid professional racers…. I’m a student from Manchester who loves riding my Ellsworth Dare, when he gets the time!”

Jack rolled his Crankworx momentum straight into the Canadian National at Sun Peaks where he won overall - beating riders like Curtis Keene and Tyler Moorland. The victory gave Jack 30 UCI points thereby qualifying him for the 2010 World Cup circuit. Look out Euro-dogs - Jack and “Roxy” will be on your heels shortly! Check out the Crankworx video here (need link!).

Neven Steinmetz
Our palindromed (N-E-V-E-N) gravity girl, Neven Steinmetz has been ripping her Project Pink Dare, Moment and Specialist at races in Europe and the US this summer. Not even a cracked pelvis can slow this Boulder, CO-based rider down. (need video link!). Neven has “special” relationships with her Ellsworth quiver as she’s lovingly named each bike:

“The Dare is called “Hubba Bubba.” The Moment is called “The Pink Panther.” The most special of all to me, though, is the Specialist, and it’s called “Pauline.” My Grandmother, who is a breast cancer survivor, is called Pauline, and Ellsworth decided to have her name anodized on my frame for me. It gave me chills when I pulled it out of the box!”

BUT, That’s not ALL…Primal Quest…North America’s premier expedition class adventure race.

Five Ellsworth equipped teams raced in Primal Quest - in the Badlands of South Dakota. With courses as wicked and treacherous as PQ’s, it’s a testament to the quality of Ellsworth’s full suspension bikes. Ellsworth is the number one independently campaigned endurance racing bike chosen for races such as these, in the world. The efficiency, durability, and reduced rider fatigue of the Instant Center Tracking (ICT)- equipped bikes gives riders a stark advantage. Team WEDALI (“we eat dirt and like it”) was our top placed team, finishing 5th. Over 10 days and 600+ miles across the Badlands WEDALI rode their Ellsworth Truths, hiked, rappelled and paddled their way against the top adventure racing teams in the world. Other Ellsworth-supported teams competing in the race were: Team Semper Fi (composed of active Marines), Team SOAR, and Team Merrill.

But, there’s MORE!
Velo Bella-Ellsworth Cyclocross team
With cyclocross season kicking into gear in a matter of weeks, we’re proud to announce sponsorship of the VeloBella-Ellsworth CX team for 2009. The pro team’s success over the last few seasons and the organization’s commitment to bringing women into cycling makes this partnership a natural fit. The team will ride Ellsworth “Roots” bikes through the mud, dirt, and grass. Be on the look out for pro team riders Amy Dombrowski and Barb Howe as they race events and take podiums across the US.

VeloBella is hosting a cyclocross clinic for women in September – click here for details.
