Despite Economic Climate, New Clear Creek County Bike and Ski Shop Thrives

A Culture of Speed seeks to fulfill a need currently unmet by area retail stores

DUMONT, CO JUNE 13 2010– Amid dire economic predictions, rather than postponing business plans and waiting for the economy to improve, Harry Rhulen, owner of a Culture of Speed (aCOS), opened a new retail location in Dumont, CO this month with a large online and retail location in Clear Creek County. One might think it was a bad idea. To the contrary, Rhulen has found that in a down economy with high gas prices, people are rediscovering the joy of two-wheeled life.

“Colorado is a cycling destination to the world. Dumont doesn’t have a lot of neighborhood and locally-owned shops, and there’s no one around that can offer the quality and exclusivity of the brands that we carry. With more people excited about cycling, the area needed another store that could offer unique inventory, custom builds and great advice,” said Rhulen from his boutique style stand-alone store- a rehabbed mining home gracefully restored from the turn-of the century.

Growth of the business will come from the large online store www.acultureofspeed.com and is due in part to Rhulen’s business partner Santiago Garcia III. Garcia has over 15 years of experience ranging from recumbent bikes to World Cup worthy downhill rigs and is certified by the prestigious Barnett Bicycle Institute in Colorado Springs, CO. “We are really focused on the customer,” said Garcia. “It’s the old cliché, take care of the customer and they will take care of you. Everyone at aCOS is committed to spending the time needed to make sure our customers leave the store with what they want and often a bit more! ”

A host of former and aspiring racers, athletes, parents and casual cyclists, the staff and the support team at aCOS are dedicated to providing a relaxed and friendly atmosphere –which happens to come to them naturally. aCOS is the exclusive North American retail outlet for Corsair bikes. Additionally aCOS carries hard-to-find brands such as Intense, Morpheus, Foes, Black Market and Ellsworth, which puts them in a unique position in the marketplace by providing an unmatched custom build program for riders. aCOS also boasts the largest pumptrack in 1,000 miles and a new dual slalom course.

“It all comes down to being flexible. Today’s consumer knows what he or she wants and they need trust that you have their best interests in mind," said Garcia. “We want people to be happy and keep coming back. They can take a test ride around our pump track or head down our dual slalom course before they make their decision.”

Rhulen and Garcia also have extended store hours on weekends to meet the needs of today’s work and travel schedules. Hours of operation are Monday to Thursday 10am to 6pm and weekends 8am to 8pm. Striving to serve all customers-from casual biker to professional- aCOS carries brands including: Trek, Commencal, Oakley, Marzocchi, Kali, GoPro, Bern, Black Market, Troy Lee, Dakine, Native Eyewear, Foes, Ellsworth and Deity among others. “We want to serve everyone, and serve them well, from a family with kids to a racer’s custom build,” said Garcia.
