Press Release

Buy Some Trail, Win a Santa Cruz of Your Choice! 2

Five Bucks A Foot is back! With the generous help of our friends at Santa Cruz Bicycles, the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship is proud to announce another installment of our wildly popular Five Bucks A Foot campaign. For those of you not already familiar with the concept, here’s how it works:

This is a win/win situation. By entering, you stand a chance to win the bike of your choice, with a value of up to $10,000. And, with every foot of trail purchased, you help us build and maintain an expanding network of world class singletrack (the perfect place to ride that new bike you just won), employ local trailbuilders, and bolster the economy of our local community.

If you want to know more about the trails that this campaign is funding, keep reading!

The origins of Five Bucks a Foot are rooted in the rocky soil of Butcher Ranch trail above Downieville, and chipped from the granite boulders on Mills Peak. Faced with dwindling grant funding for these projects a few years ago, we came up with the notion of Five Bucks a Foot to try and convey what the actual cost of building trail is up here (and that number – five bucks a foot – is a pretty decent average. Smooth dirt naturally costs less to sculpt, while blasting and hammering through granite costs a whole lot more. But up around here, for general high country trail building in the Northern Sierra, five bucks a foot is a decent rule of thumb), and at the same time offer a really powerful incentive to you, the people who are helping us get our work done.

To date, we have run four (is that right?) of these fundraisers, and you have raised over $150,000, all of which has helped build the following trails: Mills Peak, Butcher Ranch extension and Pack Saddle.

Much as we would love to say that the federal and state funding outlook has improved, we can’t. Things are still bleak out there. But we’re not going to let that stop us! SO, this time around, we have three concurrent projects, each of which is short on funds. First up, there’s the Mount Hough/South Park system just outside of Quincy, which is an amazing asset and is *this* close to completion. Then we have the Boca & Loyalton project at the south end of Sierra Valley, a 26-mile trail which we have just broken ground on, and are super stoked to see come to life. And finally, there’s the Corral Trail in South Lake Tahoe. This is new ground for us – not only is it in South Lake Tahoe, but it is also going to be done in partnership with TAMBA and the USFS, AND it is a project dedicated to bringing carefully engineered and flow and gravity to the area. Yep, we’re gonna be building some jumps and berms!

Winner is chosen at random on June 3rd at 8:00PM PST and announced soon after.
