pros and cons of fenders

What are the pros and cons of having fenders on a MTB, I'm thinking of getting one but not sure.

I'm a bit out of the loop, haven't even thought about fenders but I think fenders would be cool as long as you aren't riding in a lot of mud or some where that could pack them up with junk, you could spray them with cooking spray i guess. If was a hard core racing type i don't think i would want them. I think this may be a joke? LOL?

My take? As puffy and dry as So. Cal. is at the moment, I'd skip them.

For street riding? Awesome.

If the trails are wet enough that you need them? It might be time to avoid them.
