Saw this over on Gizmodo. Pretty crafty, but would it lift my 55lb commuter?

Let's face it, no matter how strong, tough and complicated your lock is, motivated bike burglars will find a way to steal your bike. But what if your bike lock can climb up a post and raise it off the street?

That's what Conrad, a German company, is showing in the video (along with awesome development stages). They've built a contraption that attaches a lock to motorized skateboard wheels so it can scale a lamp post. Basically, attach your bike to the lock and the lock to the post and it'll zoom up out of arm's reach. It's a pretty (hilariously) genius idea that'll surely curb bike robbers...until they start using a ladder.

This thing should work from a solar battery.
Also, is there any protection from birds sitting on the bike and pooping on it? Needs an umbrella of some sort.

That thing looks huge and pretty heavy. Good idea, if it wasnt for the weight....

Those are inline skate wheels, not skateboard wheels. but that contraption looks pretty awesome nevertheless

Might not be practical for the average commuter but I can still see a market. Smart idea. I think bird poo is acceptable so long as my bike is safe.

it's a good ideia, but the wieght and the bird poo it's a big issue. if that is resolved i'll surely get one!
Ha! But what about the fact that most posts get skinnier as you go up?

thats why the back wheel is on top of the device, the weight of the bike wedges the wheels against the post, although im sure if the post got skinny enough it would start to slide down. damn Germans and there awesome engineering.
