yeah, 29er would be odd for troy, but couldn't see if the frame was alloy or not and the wheels looked kinda big. friend of mine is racing at maribor this weekend and confirmed the 27,5 wheels.

When he rode for Specialised he rode 29er trail bikes all the time and was definitely comfortable on them. Cant see why 29er wouldn't work.

not defending pb in any way but is having those shots in a staffers folder and not posted to their front page still blowing the embargo? obviously it's shady to have them publicly available on the site at all, let alone an employees public folder that many users could and would obviously check out from time to time. just curious what the embargo rules generally are.

i'm sure it was just an oversight on mike's part, but we're really diligent about keeping things off public spaces. i think the editors/staffers there know that people follow their accounts like hawks, especially when followers are notified of new items added to an account, so it's a bummer this one slipped by. not sure how their settings work for public/private stuff.

Since you're the head honcho around here, what's the reasoning behind embargoes? It's sure not common in other industries. When a reporter/writer uncovers something new, it's a scoop or spy shot or just plain doing your job.

Is it tied to advertising dollars as some suggest? Is it just a "gentleman's" agreement? Obviously I'm not in the bicycle industry, but I've always been curious as to why it's prevalent in the bicycle world.

I'm not trying to start anything or insult anybody, just interested in learning what's it all about. Thanks Shawn

The whole of IT industry has embargoes. Reviewers get the goods before the release date to test the product, prepare the review and then publish it once the embargo is lifted. Everybody publishes on the same day.

loic's demo for some fun stuff : ) https://www.vitalmtb.com/features/Pro-Bike-Check-Loic-Brunis-Specialize…

^^basically what primoz said. brands have to get their ducks in a row before an official launch, but media outlets etc can get access to a product before it launches for timely reviews etc when the embargo is up (like the assegai now or the stumpy earlier this week).

mostly it's gentlemen's agreement between brands and outlets but sometimes it's as formal as signing NDA's. the major outlets are all really good about honoring embargoes. it's usually some kind of fluke (like timezone confusion) or a mistake in a privacy setting that let's something out of the bag early. in the past, we've noticed brand videos that are public when they shouldn't be and we let them know instead of poaching the video. forgetting one click on a website can ruin an embargo.

i'd be so stressed to be a product manager these days with all the phones and stuff around. keeping a secret is nearly impossible. a lot of times shops get access to things early and have leaked things. it's tough and tempting. if a product gets leaked early, questions from consumers, sales reps, shops, etc just infiltrate the brand and probably end up causing confusion and waste a lot of time. i will say, however, i love me some spy shots : )

Am I the only one wondering what the deal is with the whole Mondraker team racing in branded Alpinestars gear and Laurie rocking the full Fox kit? I know they have different personal helmet and goggle sponsors, as a lot of athletes do, but this looks a bit strange. I saw it in Maribor and I thought it must be some sort of a deal that doesn't cover the iXS Cup, but now at full World Cup level... Hm! Could there be something in the works between Mondraker and Fox or did Laurie, erm, lose his kit and they didn't have anything else available since two weeks now? Wink

Anyway, nerd rant over! Time to go ride!

All the team gear looks pretty similar, but Brooke is actually the only guy in Alpinestars kit (which looks a lot like the Dainese kit they were in last few years). Jones had been wearing 100% at some pre-season event but he and Brage are both now in PULS jerseys and pants. You wouldn't be the only one confused, we spent much of this week in Croatia trying to figure out who was who with all the different bikes, gear, and clothing being used for the first time.

I was told it's the Alta bike/ski/board shop in Queenstown (they rent Mondraker DH bikes) , but can't confirm if that is true or not.

Cheers for the answer, Lee! But I am still a tad surprised that there wasn't much branding visible on all that kit...

Thanks for the beautiful pictures,
Mx
