Matt Thompson may be the biggest reason for the existence of Vital MTB. As one of my best friends, back in 2009, he suggested I contact Vital Media Network to see if they were interested in starting a mountain bike website. They had Vital MX and Vital BMX running successfully and I ran Littermag at the time. The rest is history. Matt is a staple fixture of the Colorado mountain biking community and has taken a life dedicated to downhill racing and turned it into a career as a trail builder with his company, Momentum Trail Concepts. We talk about his personal history, the Colorado race scene, developing municipal trail systems, head injury and DH superfandom in this special interview. -gordo

The interview is LONG, but great. Luckily I was driving from Durango to Evergreen and it made the time pass fast. Loved the reason for moving to Eagle and was blown away to hear about the head injury. Heal fast, and keep building rad trails for all of us to enjoy. No 20, 30, 40 foot jumps for me though.

Fantastic interview. Yes, SS is right, we are interested in hearing what MT has to say.

Much respect to Mr Thompson as an athlete, professional, family man, and friend.

Great commentary on the 90's and early 00's. Wanna ride the chairlift and some tough DH terrain? You gotta race, and guess what, you get 3 days of practice and a lift ticket for $50! There was no lift service except at the races. Shuttle trails were scarce, scorned upon, and quietly guarded. Downhillers in CO did what they had to do to get their practice and testing, and the bikes broke constantly. GOOD TIMES!

I will be attempting to implement the "singletrack sidewalks" concept here in Durango. It's a fantastic idea and one that should be universal.

Time for a field trip to Eagle to smash out some Enduro laps! Come on man, I know you like to pedal! Wink

So, you guys don't make it too hard to figure out the trails you are talking about there with the rogue shuttle trails. How do you guys feel about the current thought process of trying to legitimize those trails?

I'm totally unaware, but not at all surprised we've not been contacted. Would be happy to be consultant on any such project as few know the terrain as well as we do.

Ahhhhh, yes, That would explain things more clearly then. We're not referencing the same spots. Aside from some maintenance and helping those locals, I've not done much digging at the spot you're thinking of. In the interview, we're referencing a different spot entirely.

So good to hear you guys choppin’ it up. You guys made helped make the mountain states cup and sol vista some of my best cycling memories! I really enjoyed this interview. Takes me back the basement of operations at sol vista, hearing the banter and toilets flush in the pipes over head. Thanks guys!

Thank you for this, it brought back some good memories, made me realize I was one of those 5 o clock Arbor leeches, and made me laugh out loud many times. Mad respect to you MT and thank you for everything you did as it has had a big impact one way or another in my life! I have a few questions: what position did you play? How did you get involved with Sol Vista(FYI loved the 3 amigos and the elevated Mountain Cross start, bummer that the crusher didn't)?
