With 2021 just a moment away, I’m stoked to be sitting with a local bike shop owner for our show today. Ryan Cowling is the owner of Kore North Bike Shop in Meridian, Idaho. If I ever had a dream shop setup, it would be this…mountain bikes and skateboards!

We discuss his history with bicycles, discovering mountain biking while he lived in Japan, the ups and downs of running a local bike shop, being robbed and recovering stolen bikes with help from good friend Prison Mike, his love of Red Bull Rampage and so much more.

His story about the business of mountain bike and mountain bike scene in Japan is very true, the Japan market is difficult to navigate and hasn't changed drastically over the last couple of years. That said fujimi panorama still exist and other places have open to MTB riding like fujiten managed by a couple of local guys who are working a ton everyday to make things better and more accessible to those willing to give the sport a try. Trail building in Japan is already in itself is a very complicated and arduous task, specially when it comes to getting permission from land owners (of which there can be a lot in small piece of land) and local government permissions.

I can relate to Ryan’s BMX story. Growing up in urban environment with parents just trying to make it every month, as a child, access to a decent working bike or being able to ride in the woods or trails was simply not a option for me until adulthood. The first time out on the trails, on a bike I purchased on my own, was a bit of a emotional experience for me. The pictures from mags like Mountain Bike Action I used to read at the local grocery store had finally become a reality for me.
