Fox's New Rampage Pro Carbon Gravity Helmet - First Look 11

Fox updates their top-of-the-line gravity full face helmet.

Today Fox released their completely redesigned Rampage Pro Carbon helmet. The helmet, known as the RPC, has been seen for the last couple weeks on downhill and freeride athletes. Lee Trumpore first spotted the new lid at the Windrock Pro GRT where Loris Vergier was seen sporting the helmet. Fox sent us a Rampage Pro Carbon to review. We've only had the helmet for a couple days and have not had any ride time with it yet, but we have some initial impressions about the flagship gravity lid that retails for $499 USD. The Rampage Pro Carbon comes in five different colors, most of them pretty subtle. We received the Beast Metallic silver colorway, but that Black Iridium option looks pretty slick! Sizes available are S, M, L and XL

Our size Large RPC weighed 1312 grams on our scale. Much of the technology you'll read about in the press release below is built into the helmet, not seen. The new Fluid Inside components, however, stand out with a blue color beneath the removable X-Static liner. The squishy pads help control rotational and linear impacts in addition to the Varizorb EPS in the helmet.

The other piece of obvious, external tech is the MVRS, Magnetic Visor Release System. It's a visor securely held in place with magnets that, in theory, will allow the visor to pop off in a crash. This helps save the visor (a nice financial perk), but most importantly allows it to break away and reducing forces that could tweak a rider's neck in a crash. The magnets are strong and the visor is stable. There is no up or down adjustment of the visor as a result, but the angle and visuals of the helmet look to be on point. Popping the visor off without thumbscrews or hardware is handy when packing or shipping the helmet, even though the supplied helmet bag is designed around the helmet with the visor in place.

ย

We requested a size Large RPC because our Fox Proframe helmet is a size large and fits us well; easy to pull on or off and secure when on our head. The Rampage Pro Carbon in size Large was considerably more snug than our size Large Proframe. It wasn't a matter of swapping out pad sizes, it was the shell and/or EPS itself being too tight. There are 3 shell sizes and 4 EPS sizes for the Rampage, so we'll be trying an XL to see how it feels. We recommend trying on the helmet before you buy it. The aesthetics, construction and attention to detail were exceptional and what we'd expect from a high-end helmet.

Stay tuned for updates as we try an XL and get some ride time in the new Fox RPC.

COMPLETELY REDESIGNED FOR 2019!

The proven performance of the RPC combined with the revolutionary innovation of the Proframe results in a new standard for comfort, airflow and fit in a gravity helmet. Designed with direct input from our elite Downhill and Freeride athletes, this new flagship helmet offers the most complete levels of performance and protection we have ever offered in a helmet.

"Since it's launch in 2013 the RPC has been one of the best known and most sought after full face helmets in the Mountain Bike world. Worn by some of the world's best Mountain Bike athletes over the last 6 years it has been podium proven at the highest levels of Downhill, Enduro and Freestyle competition. This redesign has taken inspiration from our ground breaking Proframe helmet - the first DH certified full face trail helmet in the market - and elevated the airflow and performance features to all new levels for Fox." - Chris Blum: Category Manager, Fox MTB.

The RPC is the first helmet with two rotational management systems: Fluid Insideโ„ข and MVRS, delivering the highest level of protection we have ever offered while increasing breathability and reducing weight.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

1. FLUID Inside

All new Fluid Insideโ„ข rotational and linear impact management system is intended to help manage the rotational energy transmitted to the riderโ€™s brain in the event of an angled impact and linear energy in the event of a direct impact.

2. MVRS

Foxโ€™s exclusive Magnetic Visor Release System (MVRS) is a pro-level patent pending feature that removes the visor screws and replaces them with magnets to allow the visor to release from the helmet in the event of a crash, while also securely staying in place when needed.

3. VARIZORB

Dual density, In-Mold Varizorbโ„ข EPS balances weight and performance and is meant to provide improved protection by spreading forces over a wider surface area

4. INJECTED MOLDED MESH

Injected Mesh vent screens maintain superior ventilation and airflow, while providing protection from dirt and debris.

5. CAGE CHIN BAR / EYEPORT

Patent-pending injection molded chin bar/eye port CAGE is intended to improve energy absorption in the event of an impact and optimizes airflow to the rider.

6. MCT

MCT (Multi Composite Technology) Shell construction with 3 shell and 4 EPS sizes for best in class fit.

7. X-STATIC LINERยฎ

Removable, washable X-Staticยฎ comfort liner and cheek pads that are antimicrobial and manage odor while wicking moisture away from the head.

As proof of the elevated performance levels of the new RPC, the Fox elite MTB team wore the helmet at the kickoff to the 2019 Mountain Bike season - Crankworx Rotorua. Over the six day event Fox athletes wearing the all new RPC appeared on nine podiums including first place performances for Keegan Wright in the Dual Slalom and Brett Rheeder in the first Slopestyle Triple Crown event of the season.
