Your article was enlightening. I have been struggling to understand the antipathy towards e-bikes and I think you've highlighted it - culture. There would appear to be a feeling that e-bikes don't fit an idealized notion of mountain bike culture and might bring people to the trails who aren't like “us" - who...more

Disagree with the stance of this article from an opinion basis, but there is also numerous incorrect pieces of info, I also do not appreciate Vital's choice of image for the lead (Racer guy hammering, and some dude bobbling on a roach emtb with no helmet, no proper attire, etc....that misleads the reader that...more

^^this. Deregulating is something commuters might want to do. Most eebers want more battery not less

Well you first point about the ride quality is a bit pointless as that’ll get sorted as the bikes get iterated.
Guess all the pros are wrong so.

Seems to me that the whole thing will always be debated, and that's the end of the story. There will ever be consensus, and that's fine.

Just because there are cranks, some people will believe ebikes are mountian bikes. Some people, on the other hand, believe any addition of power will make it a motorcycle. Do...more

Its pretty clear you have not actually ridden an ebike JCL, so your comments are as usual for such fairly incorrect. If you use the mode that makes you Nino, your ride will be pretty short. I actually found it usually adds very little to distance, but is a more consistent workout due to man handling the bike...more

I honestly can beat my wife up most trails(excluding fire roads) on her ebike. it certainly doesn’t turn everyone in to Nino.

@kdiff: have you ridden a motorcycle? Have you ridden an ebike? That would tell you all you need to know. In CA we classify pedal assist motors at 500watts max assist and up to 18mph top speed. For reference 1000 watts equates to 1.25 horsepower at most. A good motocross bike will have at least 30 horsepower so...more

And here I thought most of the e-MTB haters were on Pinkbike...

Aside from whatever laws are in place in certain locations, I don't get why so many people have the need to try to dictate what can be ridden on a mountain, what makes you "part of mainstream culture" or what-not. Does it really bother you so much...more

Bias is pretty evident from the furst paragraph. Nothing but an outdated confirmatiin bias piece. Who knows "they dont belong"?
All the eebers i know are ex dhers and freeriders(some current)
One thing i did learn, actually just further confirming a fact, jcl is a triggered moran. Even if i didnt know he was lame on a bike everyone i know that rides an eeb would get tired of waiting fir him pretty quick, up or down. Literally everyone of them on the down and most on the up, on whatever bike

I know at least 3. 2 from UK and 1 from Canada
The article might be true for the US but not for Europe and from vital I expect a little more openness and not such narrow minded view

Feels like a rant that was a long time coming. I am not going for popularity on Vital here, any pro ebike comments gets knocked pretty quickly online. I believe pedal assist ebikes are simply not a problem. Sure they are not as fun, most days I agree with that, and that’s why mine hasn’t been ridden even once in...more

Well said! Like I said in my opinion, I'm not coming down on anyone that chooses to have fun in a different way. I don't hate on roadies, cyclocross riders, or any other subset of two-wheel fun. You're having a good time and I say good for you. I will be really interested to see if your prediction comes true...

I've been mountain biking for quite awhile now (1988). I've owned many different bikes over the years, DH, Freeride, Enduro, trai, etc. I recently bought an Ebike and I will never go back to a mechanical/traditional mtb.
I've found climbing to actually be creative and FUN now!-having the ability to pop off of...more

Pros only riding ebikes for commercial is simply not true. So
Many pros use ebikes because they’re just fun. They just don’t show it on their daily insta. The Cycling market is driven by Europe and they understand ebikes. This article shows that it’s still a long way to go for the US and especially for US...more

your "reasoning" and "common sense" have no place here. This is the internet!

A distinction needs to be made between a pedal assist and a "throttle bike". With a pedal assist you don't go roosting around and riding uphill at the same speed you descend and the negative impact on a trail is about the same as any other mtb.
Bikes where you can simply throttle up and...more
