Kelly McGarry Crashes Hard in China 35

Things took a turn for the worse in China. Kelly McGarry gets into trouble trying to slow down for one of the massive stair hucks at the Tianmenshan Red Bull event, and ends up taking a massive huck to flat and detonating on impact. From Kelly himself: "Hey team thanks for the messages, I'm all good, munched my foot a bit and got two cuts on arm totalling 7 stitches. Brakes cooked and pulled to the bar half way down course ( 1000 ft of 50 degree stairs + 97 kg bloke at race pace) ...was on a runaway train ...Scary moment for sure .Stoked to be ok. Cheers".

anyone saying his wheels or whatever part should have been able to take that is retarded. he just cleared 60-70 stairs to flat. I'd love to see any DH bike take that with out being destroyed.

@general lee ...I've twisted lowers on a fork and not a ding to the wheel. Snapped a wheel and not a wobble of the head tube. Thrashed a stem, bars, etc and no fork movement. It's nuts how many wheels he explodes though, you gotta admit. I'm of the mind that guys doing what he does should just about be able to snap a frame quicker than a wheel. Heck, it would almost seem safer at that.

How did he do that to a head tube and yet the stem/bar looks Okie dokie? You'd think they would sheer before a headtube did that.

McGarry runs so hot, he melts metal.

God damn that was vicious... glad he's all good and kinda weirded out by the couple of Chinese "fans" who were yelling the organizers are murderers and that Kelly broke both arms when he clearly didn't. A strange event all around and probably one of the gnarliest. They should open up a bike museum in Rotorua called, "things that McGarry broke".

Maybe there is something to be said for brakes which use DOT 5.1 after all. Even if it is only for pretty extreme situations!

It looks like the guys in blue are ignoring him, but they are actually quite a ways away farther down the stairs and across the platform. There's a reverse angle floating around that gives a bit more perspective but I'm not posting it as it's just gratuitous.

Bender broke plenty of wheels and if you watch some of the video compilations you will see. He was also running 12" front travel and between 12-16" in the rear, 24" rear wheel that was a double wide rim laced to seismic hubs and 3" tires. Not saying this Isn't a bad crash but no one went as hard as bender.

What are you talking about? Bender never did a jump like this to flat concrete! I think the whole point is that this was brake failure not some big stunt. Hence him hitting the floor so hard!

My blood was boiling that the three people in blue coats who just stood there like nothing happened. Even if I don't know the person or can't offer any real help, I'm going to rush over and ask if they are ok, tell them they are going to be OK, help is on the way, etc. These guys were so cold it was unsettling.
