First Look: Reynolds Blacklabel Carbon Wheels and DH Prototypes

View as: Slideshow | One Page
Reynolds is pleased to introduce their super sleek looking Blacklabel carbon wheels.
Four models are offered that cover the enduro, all-mountain, trail, and cross-country realms. Each rim uses Reynolds' MR5 carbon fiber rim construction.
The wheels are built using DT Swiss Aerolight spokes and 240s hubs.
Weight, stiffness, acceleration, and control were considerations for each wheel. At the far ends of the spectrum, the 27.5-inch AM has a 23mm internal width and the 29 XC comes in at 19mm. Rim depth varies, too.
Tubed or tubeless? That's up to you.
The DT 240s hubs allow you to change up the axle size if needed.
Shimano and SRAM freehubs are offered.
They use the standard 18-tooth hub ratchet, but are upgradable to 36.
Reynolds opted for Center Lock brake disc mounts all around in the name of weight savings.
Eliot Jackson, Bernard Kerr, and Micayla Gatto have been testing various prototype wheels since the Fort William World Cup.
Their race weapon of choice? The Pivot Phoenix DH Carbon.
The team used various 27.5 AM wheels with tweaks to the MR5 carbon construction throughout the season.
The result of their testing and development efforts will drop in 2016.
For more details on the Blacklabel wheels, visit www.reynoldscycling.com. They go for $2,400 per set.

Description
Since the early 1990s Reynolds Cycling has been crafting high performance carbon fiber products. For 2015, they’re introducing a premium range of four purpose built carbon wheels for everything from cross-country to enduro race use. They're also working with the Pivot Factory World Cup DH team to develop a downhill wheelset for 2016.

Blacklabel wheels are made with Reynold’s MR5 (Mountain Rim 5) technology, which is a precise method of assigning different carbon fiber and lay-ups to five rim regions. Reynolds specifies type of fiber, epoxy and resin adjusting the specs to achieve the perfect tensile strength, stiffness and elongation for each rim model. Each batch is certified according to Reynolds’ specifications.

Curious how they ride? Don’t miss our long term Blacklabel review.
