The talk of the Sea Otter Classic revolved around the number of new fat bikes, plus sized bikes, and the components to build them. Like it or not, big tires are upon us in a big way, or at least they will be in 2016.

There's a lot up in the air right now - what tire width equates to what, what air pressure to run, what rear hub standard to use, who the bikes are intended for, what they excel at, where they struggle... Heck, the things are so new and so foreign to us that we didn't even know if we should cover them! That said, the new plus size concept is interesting and may be appealing to some.

Not wanting to leave the new kid sitting on the sidelines, we've prepared this photo gallery in the usual Vital style - a bit of tech mixed in with a bit of fun. Enjoy everything plus sized from sunny California...

We'll kick things off old school with the 1993 Hanebrink Extreme Terrain Machine, aka the first production fat bike ever made. With 8-inch wide tires running just 2psi, it's still the fattest of the fat.

Mo' wider, mo' problems. Got to love the bar end for a derailleur guard!
